Quilters' Recipes

Add: 4 eggs;
6 over-ripe bananas;
1 tsp vanilla (or a bit more); and
1/2 cup milk
When well blended, add: 3 cups SELF RISING FLOUR and
1-1/2 cups chopped walnuts or pecans
Spray 2 loaf pans with non-stick cooking spray. Pour batter into pans and bake at 350 for 1 hour and 15 minutes. Bread is done when knife inserted into center comes out clean and not gooey. Try not to under bake or over bake.

Committee Report - Challenge Project
by Janice Reece |
|
Our 2008 Challenge Project will have a political flair. Make a wallhanging, quilt, quilted garment, or quilted accessory that expresses your feelings about the 2008 Presidential election. This could include your views on the primaries, the conventions, any candidate (or group of candidates), an issue (or more than one if you want), the election process, or any other matter that pertains to what has been and will be an historic event. Use those UFOs, machine and/or hand stitches you've been waiting to use and, of course, your imagination.
Your challenge projects are due by the January 2009 meeting.

A "door prize" is what you win when you're riding a bicycle and someone swings his car door all the way open directly in your path without looking first. Or, maybe not...
Please bring in some small NEW items and/or a nice piece of fabric for door prizes. Also, please bring in fabric and quilt-related books/magazines that we can sell in Market Place (proceeds from sale of donated items will go to the Uhuru treasury). Contact Jayne Hirst with questions.

Tips to boost your creativity |

Flatten a warped cutting mat; flat storage for pieced blocks
(I havent tried this tip but it looks promising, and it sure can't hurt - Linda) "My cutting mat warped when I left it in my car in the hot sun. To flatten it, I laid it on a towel on a table top and placed a hot, wet towel on top. I ironed the wet towel until it was dry, then flipped the mat over, wet the towel again, and ironed until dry. My mat was as good as new."
Block Storage - Use a large pizza box to store quilt blocks; this can be used for your blocks of the month.

A Stitch in Vine: Botanical Quilts
The United States Botanic Garden explores new territory in the cultural meaning of plants with its first-ever textile exhibit! A Stitch in Vine presents botanically themed contemporary quilts handmade by artists of the Chesapeake & Potomac Appliqué Guild. Ranging from a diminutive 17” square to queen size, the quilts are meticulously crafted works of art that include a diversity of design -- from the charming patterns found in the distinctive “Baltimore Album” quilts of the mid-19th century, to modern-day designs showcasing flowers, fruits, and vegetables, to a landscape resembling an Impressionist’s painting.
Visitors to A Stitch in Vine will delight in identifying the plants featured in the quilts -- whether they are grapevines, tomatoes, or pomegranates; lemons, melons, or plums; the humble native pokeweed; or tropical anthuriums from our own Jungle in the Conservatory. Even the threads and fabrics (such as cotton) used in the quilts’ construction remind us of the way plants inspire and help us implement our artistic endeavors! A Stitch in Vine opened on Saturday, February 16, and will remain on display in the West Orangerie of the Conservatory through Sunday, April 27, 2008.
