Sew Help Me. . .
Tips to boost your creativity

Review this checklist to keep your sewing machine in tip-top working order:

  1. NEVER sew over needles and pins.
  2. Use only needles made to fit your brand and model of machine. Needles should be replaced every 6-8 sewing hours.
  3. Clean out dust bunnies in the throat plate on a regular basis; some quilters clean after finishing every bobbin-ful.
  4. Lubricate as recommended, using oil recommended by your sewing machine manufacturer. NEVER use oil that has turned brown.
  5. If you are using a computer-based machine, ALWAYS use a surge protector (not all strip electrical units have this feature).
  6. Use high quality, long staple thread. “Bargain” thread can deposit large amounts of lint that build up in the feed dog and tension area and can cause tension problems.
  7. At least once a year, take your machine to your local dealer for a check up.

Do quilters give "blanket" protection??

Welcome, Uhuru members and guests!

I believe that variety is one of the greater spices of life ... especially in the life of today's busy quiltmaker. With that being the case, this month I'm adding a different spice to the look of the Uhuru Quilters Guild newsletter - a new online version! I hope you will enjoy this first online version and that you will find it as informative as the old version.

Members, please give me feedback on this newsletter (if any) at my regular email address. As always, our visitors and guests may send comments to newsletter@uhuruquiltersguild.org.

Visit our main site at http://www.uhuruquiltersguild.org

The Nominations Committee needs volunteers; please contact Jennifer Morris asap.

Thanks and enjoy!

U R Sew Welcome!
Sheryl Smith, Membership Chair

The roster is out! If you see a name you are not familiar with, it is probably one of our new members. Give them a howdy call!

We are halfway through the year 2006 and several of Uhuru’s long time members have not returned. The Membership Committee will be giving a “We Miss You” telephone call or post card notice (whichever is deemed necessary) in September to see how they are. Since the month of September is viewed as the “Back to School” month, I thought this would be a good time to get the old members thinking about returning. If you would like to help me in this “Back to Uhuru” campaign, give me a call.

Fiberart For A Cause

Fundraising for the American Cancer Society.

Fiberart Postcards needed for
International Quilt Festival - Houston
November 2 - 5, 2006

Goal: One thousand fiberart postcards find new homes with art-loving patrons.

Fiberart For a Cause fiberart postcards are donated by fiber artists around the world. Each donated postcard will be available for a $30 donation to the American Cancer Society. New postcards will be added every day to the "Big Wall" at International Quilt Festival-Houston until all the postcards are up or "adopted".

This will be the last FFAC fiberart postcard sale (except for an online sale of any "orphan" fiberart postcards from IQF-Houston). 100% of the funds raised are donated to the American Cancer Society. FFAC has already donated over $50,000 to the American Cancer Society!

For guidelines for making and donating fiberart postcards, go to http://www.virginiaspiegel.com/NewFiles/ACS/MakingFFACPostcards.html.

Block of the Month
Renea Bailey, Chair

book cover

The theme for the 2006 Block of the Month is the latest craze in quilting -- Postcard Quilts!  They are quick, uncomplicated blocks, so no UFOs will be sitting around to be quilted. You can complete several postcard quilts in no time flat!  Each month I will make a postcard quilt and post it along with a template so that you can create a similar postcard.  Or, let your creativity flow and create a postcard based on the theme for each month.  Have fun, and bring your postcard quilts in for show and tell.

The theme for August postcards is Hot! Hot! The Lazy Days of Summer

Just Sew You Know

Chipped Quilts

You've worked hard on an art or traditional quilt, finishing it just in time to for the show entry deadline. It is unique, valuable, and it exemplifies your best work, but . . . how confident are you regarding its safety?

For those of you who are not already aware of Chipped Quilts, it is a national quilt identity system and registry. This high-tech quilt ID system is made possible by a microchip that is implanted in the quilt, with a unique code that can be registered to the quilt owner.

You can get more detailed information about this quilt identity system at www.chippedquilts.com.

The Charm Exchange
Shirley Hodge, Chair

Because we had no meeting in July and August, we will have to double up the Charm Exchange accordingly. In order to prevent having too many different themes to sort out, we will double up twice as explained below:

At our next meeting (September), bring in your squares that you would have brought in at the July meeting. At that time we will have the sign-up sheets for both the August and September exchanges.

In October, you will bring in your August and September squares, and sign up for October and November. In November, bring the October and November squares and we're even!

As a reminder, see the information below for the July exchange:

The theme for the July Charm Square exchange is "Celestrials, Stars.

The following 11 (eleven) people signed up:  Deb Sanger, Pat Johnson, Jocelyn Herbert, Jackie Tyson-Hope, S. Yvonne Nickens, Sarah Voyt-Knox, Jennifer Morris, Sheryl Smith, Sandra Ealy, Nadine Mills, Shirley Hodge.

Cut 6-1/2” (six-and-one-half-inch) squares of 100% pre-washed cotton (please make sure that the size and quality of your squares are what you yourself would like to receive).  Please remember to cut off the selvedges before you cut your squares.  Place squares in a baggie with your name on it, and put it in the "Charm Squares" basket.

If you have any questions, please e-mail or telephone Shirley Hodge.  If you have signed up and then are unable to come to the meeting, please mail squares or have them delivered to the meeting. To save time and ensure accuracy, charm squares will be sorted and distributed during the month and returned at the following month's meeting barring any unforeseen incidents.
