August 2008 |
The quilt show debriefing went well. There were many good suggestions for how we can make the 2010 show even better. I hope you will join me in sending Purple Hearts to Deb Sanger and Helen Dawkins for injuries suffered in the line of duty at the quilt show. Thanks to Sara Vogt-Knox who will be handling the raffle ticket sales this year. Also thanks to Felicia Few and Carolyn Burgess who stepped in to conduct the Ugly Fabric Auction. Such comedic talent! Who knew?
Mark your calendars for October 2 - 4, 2008. Uhuru will be exhibiting at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Chantilly, VA. In exchange for serving 24 “volunteer days” as volunteer ambassadors ( set up/take down hands, ticket takers, classroom angels, white glovers, etc.), we will be able to exhibit --- at no cost to us --- quilts and set up a table for selling raffle tickets and recruiting members. Quilts must have a 4 – 5” sleeve. Quilts exhibited at this venue in 2007 are not eligible. Download and bring a completed Quilt Registration form for each quilt. Quilts for this venue will be collected at both the August and September meetings. For more information, go to www.sewingexpo.com. If you wish to volunteer as an ambassador, please contact Terri Sheetz, Volunteer Coordinator. Her number is 301-384-7414. Once you have a schedule with Terri, then contact me.
Because our retreat weekend (November 13 – 16) includes our regular meeting date, Uhuru’s elections will take place in December. Officers and committee chairs (Hospitality, Membership, Door Prize, Community Service, Block of the Month, Charm Squares, Website & Newsletter, Exhibits, Challenge, Programs & Workshops, Raffle Quilt, and Library), please begin to gather up receipts for reimbursement and draft a report of this year’s activities. I would like to provide the guild with a complete financial report this year.
For future reference: Don’t forget the county fairs which begin in August. Jennifer Morris and Delores Johnson are heading up the committee for an exhibit at the State House in Annapolis for February 2009. Also in February we are scheduled to do a trunk show again at the Largo-Kettering Library. One of those UnFinished Objects (UFO’s) haunting your studio would be perfect. Make a commitment to yourself to finish one UFO. See you (and your latest completed project) at the August meeting.
Sewfully,
Carol

Lamar turned the casing over several times as though he might find a clue. “Somebody is mighty serious about killing somebody.” He turned to Jamie. “Have you been printing anything controversial in your newspaper?”
She rolled her eyes. “Well, I did accidentally print that Peggy Block won a blue ribbon for her Wedding Ring quilt, when it was actually Jane Barker.”
Larmar frowned. “Did you print a retraction?” When Jamie nodded, he went on. “Well, then, we know that’s not it.” At Max’s incredulous look Lamar added, “These ladies take their quilts seriously.” "Obviously," Max said, his voice controlled as though to practice patience. "But one possibility we might consider is that Jamie is covering the mayoral campaign...."
[Larmar] looked at Jamie. “Are you sure you printed a retraction?”
“Yes, Lamar!” He sighed. “Doesn’t look like this is going to be an easy case. Doesn’t look like I’m going to be able to take time off for my annual fishing trip, either.”
“Perhaps this was politically motivated,” Max said.
Bud from the crime lab arrived ... took the casing and looked at it closely. “Man oh man, this here puppy is bad.” He looked at Jamie. “I hope you cleared up matters between the quilting-bee ladies. My wife is part of the group, and she was mad as a hornet that somebody else got credit.”
Max turned and looked out the window.…

Sew Help Me...
Tips to boost your creativity |
|
 |
|
-
When you press your binding, let it fall into a basket under the ironing board as you press it and then transport the basket back to the sewing machine and start attaching to quilt. This keeps the binding from picking up lint and threads from the floor during the pressing and attaching.
-
When you buy thread in neutral colors, buy two spools and one package of bobbins. Wind one entire spool of thread onto the bobbins and keep them handy for a quick change, rather than having to stop and wind a bobbin while you are machine piecing.
-
Glue an empty thread spool to the wrong side of a plastic template and you have a handy handle to use when tracing the outline on fabric.
-
When working on a quilt project, purchase an extra 1/2 to 3/4 of a yard of fabric and stitch up each side, making a bag - you can add an optional drawstring at the top. Use the bag to store your quilt project-in-progress. Once your quilt is complete, you then have a dust-free storage bag to store it in. Also, it works wonderfully as "gift wrap" when giving the quilt as a gift. Simply tie a pretty coordinating piece of fabric at the top for the bow.
