December 2007

As we transition to the new year, Committee Chairs for 2007 must submit requests for reimbursement with all relevant receipts. If you wish to honor a committee member, please email the names to Carol Williams by December 10. If you are not continuing in your position for 2008, please share policies and procedures with the incoming chair. If you are not able to, please let Carol or Tammie know so that we can ensure that the transition is a smooth one. I had hoped to hold a Board meeting in January and still plan to. At this point, however, I will be working January 5 and 19 supervising professional development for high school teachers.

The January meeting will be at the Cedar Heights Community Center. Planned activities include the Fons & Porter Study Group Show & Tell, photography for the National Quilting Association (NQA) Virtual Gallery, and the New Year’s Resolution. The February meeting will be held at the Largo-Kettering Library and will be followed immediately by a trunk show celebrating Black History month and African American quilting.

In the event of inclement weather, please listen to the news for announcements about closings. Generally, if the public school system is closed, we do not meet.

Our quilt show is scheduled for June 28, 2008. More details and opportunities to volunteer to follow.

Sewfully,
Carol

Uhuru members, families, and friends,
Congratulations and heartfelt thanks for a successful year. May 2008 be just as full (if not more) of good times, good friends, and good quilting!

A hand-made quilt is like a smile; it can be a little thing
that makes a big difference.

Sew Help Me. . .
Tips to boost your creativity

DJ passed these batting tips on to me:

Think "green" and use up those batting scraps. They can be used in many of the ways you would use a paper towel. Just remember they are mostly cotton so they are absorbent.

Use small 100% cotton odd shaped pieces to dust or to clean windows or mirrors and to dust the screen of your TV and PC monitor.

Cut a 9" x 12" rectangle to use in your Swiffer; wrap it around a broom and use it to knock down the cobwebs. Just throw it away -- no messy broom bristles.

Erase the black marker lines off your white board. If the marks are stubborn, use a drop of rubbing alcohol on the batting scrap.

Keep a small piece of batting at your sewing table to collect loose threads and to wipe down the sewing machine.

Have another one at the ironing station to collect threads that you trim off while ironing.
