Coordinator's
Message

December 2008

The committee brainstorming sessions were very successful at the November meeting. There were many good ideas which will be passed on to the 2009 committee chairs for consideration and possible action. Tammie Morrow (assistant coordinator), Jeanette Cumberbatch (treasurer) and I will continue in our positions; however, we cannot keep Uhuru going without your help. So far the following members have volunteered to serve in 2009:

Membership: Dawn Felix and Renea Bailey
Website & Newsletter: Linda McKenzie and Jennifer Morris
Programs & Workshops: Sarita Brewer and Deb Sanger
Uhuru, Jr:
Library: Nadine Mills
Marketplace: Elsie Houston
Community Service: Felicia Few and Pat King
Charm Squares: Jackie Tyson Hope
Vacant: Hospitality/Refreshment, Door Prize, Block of the Month, Raffle Quilt, Challenge

Our exhibit for the Miller Senate Office Building will be up from January 14 - February 28, 2009. Set up is scheduled for January 7. Quilts selected for this display will need to have

  • a 4 – 5” sleeve.
  • a labeled dowel with two screw eyes in order to be accommodated by their hanging system.
  • a labeled protective bag for storage and transport.

Download from the Uhuru website and bring a completed Quilt Registration form for each quilt. Quilts for this venue will be collected at the November and December meetings. If you are not able to attend the December meeting, please call Dolores or Carol to make arrangements to drop off your quilt by December 21. There will be a brochure produced by the Senate staff. Each quilt in the exhibit must be described and photographed for the brochure.

I want to thank again those members who have assumed leadership roles, ensuring that Uhuru remained a viable organization. I also want to thank again those members who participated in some way with the quilt show, the many displays and exhibits, the Hampton bus trip, hospitality, selling raffle tickets, sorting charm squares, helping to revive Uhuru, Jr. welcoming a new member or guest. Thank you all.

Happy Holidays!
Carol

p.s.
Roland L. Freeman has requested support for a special exhibition, Quilts for Obama: Celebrating the Inauguration of our 44th President. I plan to discuss this with you during the business meeting.

Tis the season to be quilting!

Committee Report - Raffle Quilt
Sara Vogt-Knox

Please send all outstanding money and raffle tickets to Sara Vogt-Knox, 3408 Bitterwood Pl, Apt 102, Laurel. MD. 20724. I would like to start tallying the records, so it will not be such a chore at the Christmas Party.

If you still have tickets to sell, please continue doing so. Each member is asked to sell or buy $20.00 worth of tickets. All money is used to support the guild. If your belief system does not allow you to participate in this activity, kindly return your tickets and make a gift to the guild. All checks are to be made payable to Uhuru Quilters Guild. Thanks for your cooperation. Sara Vogt-Knox

Ugly Fabric Auction
Tammie Morrow

Your last chance this year to unload-reload your gently ignored fabric!

This is our last ugly fabric auction for 2008; bring in an armload or two to be auctioned off. You may have just what somebody was hoping they'd get for Christmas! Or maybe Santa can use it instead of a lump of coal... All proceeds go to the Uhuru treasury.

Our 2009 auctions will be in March, June, September and December; check the Uhuru calendar for updates. Address any questions to Tammietrekkie@yahoo.com.

  fabric collage

The strips for December will be "red with anything"; the size is 5x45 inches again. Fold the fabric in half and cut 5 inch strips lengthwise for a total of 13 strips. At some later time or at your leisure, these strips can be used as a jelly roll to make projects that require 5 inch block combinations. Pat Speth in her Nickel Quilt book gives a wonderful simple explanation for this process and some of her finished goods are shown at the right. Many of the larger blocks look as though there are triangles in them. Their basic structure is a 5 inch block.

The following 12 members signed up for December: Sandy B., CC Flowe, Judy Roye, Jackie T., Jennifer Morris, Sarita Brewer, Denise Davis, Bernerdett King, Betty Phillips, Dawn Felix, Jackie Stafford, and Felicia Few.

Gadget - Fold It EZ

Is your fabric stash out of control? Can you have too many tools? This proves there's a gadget out there for everybody! Fold it EZ (http://www.fold-it-ez.com/index.html ).

Fold it EZ is a system of folding fabrics into a standardized size, making it easier to see what you have. It can be used for fabrics on shelves, in drawers or stored in plastic containers. The FOLD-IT-EZ can be used over and over because once you've folded your fabric, it is removed to be used on the next piece instead of stored with your fabric. It comes in 3 sizes.

Gone Quilting will soon be Gone

Deb's Sewing Room (aka Gone Quilting) will close for good on December 31st. They are offering an additional 10% off the already 65% discount to all guild members.  For your 75% discount, please enter "guild" under promo code when you check out. http://www.gonequilting.com/

A few ideas for earth-friendly quilting from Quiltmaker Magazine

  • Use the heavy subscription cards in magazines to help fold back foundations when paper piecing.
  • Donate gently used books and patterns and fabric to guilds and charity quilt groups.
  • Used dryer sheets make great foundations. Press a sheet flat and draw the foundation pattern onto it. No need to tear away after stitching.
  • Recycle bathing caps into needle pullers. Keep a small square with all your hand-sewing projects.
  • Cut up used cotton clothing for a scrap quilt.
  • When you dust, use batting scraps as dust magnets and then throw them away. Leftover pieces of batting can also be used for small quilt sandwiches to practice machine quilting. When the practice piece is finished, turn those sandwiches into potholders or doll quilts.
  • Ask for empty fabric bolts at your local quilt shop. Wrap your long cuts of fabric around the bolts for storage.
  • Wrap gifts for quilting friends in pretty fat quarters, which become part of the the gift. Tie with strips of selvedge.
  • Reuse tote bags from quilting events as grocery carriers.
  • Whenever possible, store your quilt photos electronically; print only those for which you need a hard copy.
  • Mark around discarded CDs for quilting motifs such as Baptist Fan or Clamshell. CDs also make good templates for yoyos.
  • Save short lengths of leftover binding and sew them together to bind a scrap quilt. Roll binding around a cardboard tube to keep it crisp and under control. Lay the tube in your lap at the machine, unrolling it as you sew it to the quilt.

Quilters

  Mouse dressed as Santa

Quilters are a different breed. The things we hope for, the things we need.
We wish for fabric to finish that row. We sometimes wish our guests would go.

We wish all day for that time to be that special time - that time for ME.
Each needle is threaded, the colours arrayed.
Scissors and pattern have been carefully laid.

Now we relax, this is our pleasure. Stitching this piece of soon-to-be- treasure.

We always ignore that mental warning -
Stitching all night makes it rough in the morning.

But time's unimportant, we don't heed the clocks.
We just need fabric and a sewing box.
Our project awaits us, now we proceed, This must be Heaven - what more do we need!
