January 2009

Happy New Year!

Highlights of 2008 included a well-attended quilt show, an exhibit at the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo, a bus trip to the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival, a successful quilt raffle, and growing participation in guild activities such as charm squares, challenges, show and tell, and workshops/study groups. The Christmas Party was very enjoyable. We ended the year with 85 very active members. Take time to browse the website for mementos of the year.

In 2009 we are looking forward to continued fellowship around the love of quilts and quilting, developing our skills and knowledge as quilters, finishing those UFO’s, and preparing for the 2010 quilt show. If you are interested in joining the Uhuru Quilters Guild Bee (UQGB), a Yahoo discussion group, please send an email to UQGB@yahoogroups.com This list is an outgrowth of Uhuru Quilters Guild. It provides another forum for members to share ideas, information, inspiration, and support. Membership on this list is open to---but not limited to---all members of the Guild and to all who love quilts and quiltmaking. If you are a beginner, here’s the place to ask questions and get answers from experienced quilters. If you are interested in joining this group, YOU MUST email the group and request permission to join. Also when responding to a message, please be sure to delete all but the shortest reference possible to the previous message.

Many thanks to Jackie Stafford who will be working with Uhuru, Jr. and to Mia Baker who has graciously volunteered to chair the Door Prize and Block of the Month committees. Committee chairs and other interested members will be meeting on Saturday, January 10, 2009 to decide on key activities for the year. We will be meeting at my home, 6904 Haverhill Street, Fort Washington, MD 20744 at 10:00AM.

By the third Saturday in January, An American Sampler, the exhibit at the Miller Office Building, will have been hung. Please check the Calendar for information on all the exhibits in the area commemorating the Election and Black History. Also, don’t forget to purchase your ticket for the bus trip to the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival in Hampton this year.

Sewfully,
Carol

Christmas Party Committee
Mia Baker and Myra Sumpter

The Christmas Party Committee would like to thank everyone who participated in the Christmas party: whether it was by thought or deed. It was a pleasure to be of service to Uhuru. We are hoping that everyone has had a wonderful holiday season, and are looking forward to seeing you in the New Year.

The Charm Exchange
Jackie Tyson-Hope, Chair

  fabric collage

The strips to be exchanged in January are "african fabrics"; the size is 5x45 inches again. Fold the fabric in half and cut 5 inch strips lengthwise for a total of 25 strips. At some later time or at your leisure, these strips can be used as a jelly roll to make projects that require 5 inch block combinations. Pat Speth in her Nickel Quilts book gives a wonderful simple explanation for this process.

The complete 2009 schedule is posted separately.

The following 25 members signed up for January: Pat Johnson, Sandra B., Nadine, Vinnie Best, Jackie Stafford, Denise Davis, Sarita, Betty Phillips, Bernerdett King, Cynthia Wilson, Sara Knox, Jennifer Morris, Deborah Kinsey, Jeanette Bayliss, Adrienne Randall, Renea Bailey, Pat King, Terry Gibbs, Dawn Felix, Camilla, CC Flowe, Judy Roye, Dolores Johnson, Jackie T, and Linda McKenzie.

Block of the Month
Jackie Tyson-Hope, Chair

For 2009 I would like to do the Underground Railroad Folklore blocks, since there will be opportunity to complete them within the year. Find the complete list here.

January Block of the Month - Hourglass

The triangular blocks represent morning, noon and night.  It has also been called bowtie and it meant that one was among friends. The operators of the Railroad provided new clothes so the slaves could escape detection and pass through to Canada safely. See full instructions on how to make the January's Hourglass block here.

This is an adaptation from Eleanor Burns' Underground Railroad book.

Fusing with a paper-backed product (like WonderUnder)

If you plan to use fused fabric for some unspecified future project and you're between projects, I think it's a good idea to go ahead and fuse, then put it away for later. Below is a handy guide for fusing:

1. Set your iron to the medium setting, no water, no steam, just dry.

2. Roll out your piece of WonderUnder with about a yard visible on your ironing surface, nubby side up, paper side down. Carefully lay out your fabric pieces you wish to fuse.

3. Lay your first fabric strip or piece (right side up, facing you) onto the end making sure that your fabric covers the edges, sides, and end. Cover with a sheet of baking parchment or a Teflon® sheet and iron the fabric carefully into place. Be sure to cover the fabric with a protective sheet each time.

4. Take your next piece of fabric and overlap it ever so slightly on the first piece and iron into place.

5. Continue doing this same method until all of your selected fabrics have been fused onto the WonderUnder.

6. Then iron the entire piece. Turn it over and iron the back.

7. Cut off the pieces that hang off the edges.

8. Let the entire piece cool before tearing off the backing paper. Tear off the paper and cut the fabrics apart from one another.

9. Now all you have to do is cut what you need for the project. Any extras can be used for another project.

Note: Store all of your extra pieces of fused fabrics in drawers by color for future projects. If you happen to get fusible on your iron, simply take out a couple dryer sheets and a pot holder, so you don't burn your hand. Rub the plate of your iron with the dryer sheets, and voila, it's smooth sailing!

Sarita with her photo quilt

The Workshop Committee will be presenting a demonstration of photo transfer. Deb Sanger will show us the ins and outs of freezer paper, fabric and the laser printer. I will demonstrate the photo method using Picture This by Plaid. I am trying to purchase the medium by the next meeting so we will be able to try the method. If you would like to participate, please bring a good COPY of a picture and a piece of muslin slightly larger than the photo. Please limit the size of the photo to 5x7 inches.

Sew Help Me...
Tips to boost your creativity

  Hand sewing a seam

Remove threads from carpet; safely dispose of needles

• To get the small threads off a carpet, take a lint roller attached to the end of an old mop handle (God forbid you should use your new one, lol) and 'lint roller' the area around your sewing area. It doesn't take too much time or effort, and the little threads don't get tracked all over the rest of the house.

• You probably go through needles quickly; to dispose of them safely, use an old saltshaker. Just pop the old needles in, and you don't have to worry about stepping on pieces or your "little helpers" getting into the wastebasket, etc.
