Coordinator's
Corner

Mark your calendars for September 27 – 29, 2007. Uhuru will be exhibiting at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Chantilly, VA. In exchange for serving as volunteer ambassadors (set up/take down hands, ticket takers, classroom angels, white glovers, etc.), we will be able to exhibit --- at no cost to us --- at least 25 quilts and set up a table for selling raffle tickets and recruiting members. If you were not at the June meeting and wish to volunteer, please contact Carol Williams ASAP. The committee plans to have all details finalized by the July meeting. Plans for this year’s service project, focused on children, will also be finalized.

Raffle ticket sales are going well. If you need more tickets, please let me know. Only 2,000 were printed and we want to sell each and every one. Requests for tickets have come from as far away as Massachusetts. Plans are underway for Raffle Quilt 2008. The design chosen will please both those who piece and those who appliqué.

Our website works tirelessly to promote us. We get inquiries about membership every week. Our members-at-large use it to stay informed. Consider completing your member profile and forwarding the information to Linda McKenzie. We’d love to have you!

Meeting location for July:

Cedar Heights Community Center
1200 Glen Willow Drive
Capitol Heights, MD 20743

Sewfully,
Carol

Fons & Porter
Study Group

by Carol Williams

This year our workshops will be formatted as study groups. One group will mainly focus on learning the skills featured in Quilters Complete Guide by Marianne Fons and Liz Porter in order to improve our piecing and appliqué techniques. We will be following the skills-based curriculum. Feel free to join in at any time.

At July’s meeting Deb Sanger will lead us as in learning about quarter square triangles. Try your hand at Ohio Star, Hourglass, Wheels, Big Dipper or Criss Cross. Discover whether you are a "pointed" or "pointless" person. In the Guide (revised edition) the page for the Ohio Star block is 115. Whether you wish to complete the block by hand or machine, you will need

  • ¼ yard each of two colors
  • Basic Sewing Kit [hand sewing needles, pins, thread(s) to match and/or neutral, scissors and/or thread snips, seam ripper, rotary cutter and small mat, ruler, pins, glue stick, pencil, tweezers, thimble]

Machine Piecing:

  • Sewing machine in good condition with feet (open toe, quarter inch, etc.)
  • Power strip and/or extension cord
  • Extra machine needles

There is probably some neat, handy gadget that I’ve forgotten. What’s listed here is enough to get us started. Bring your questions and helpful hints. They are for the good of all. Volunteer teachers and guides are needed for upcoming sessions. Each one teach one.

Note: We did discover a supply of the pattern book, Americana Sampler, which is no longer in print, through a bookseller on Amazon.com. When last I checked, the price was less than $10.00 for both the book and shipping.

The Charm Exchange
Cornelia Carter-Sykes, Chair

The theme for the July Charm Square Exchange is "Lavender." Twelve (12) people have signed up - they are: CC Flowe, Gloria Thomas, Cynthia York, Sandra Benjamin, Jackie Tyson-Hope, Tammie Morrow, Mia B., Myra S., Deb Sanger, Shirley Hodge, Nadine Mills, and Cornelia Carter-Sykes.

To see the complete 2007 Charm Square schedule, as well as a description of each month's selection, visit the Charm Squares page.

Cut 6-1/2” (six-and-one-half-inch) squares of 100% pre-washed cotton (please make sure that the size and quality of your squares are what you yourself would like to receive). Please remember to cut off the selvedges before you cut your squares. Place squares in a baggie with your name on it, and put it in the "Charm Squares" basket.

If you have any questions, please e-mail or telephone Cornelia. If you have signed up and then are unable to come to the meeting, please mail squares or have them delivered to the meeting. If the number of exchanges is small enough, charm squares will be sorted and distributed before the end of the meeting.

Birthday/Hospitality
The Hospitality Quintuplets: "CC" Campbell-Flowe,
Dawn Felix, Jocelyn Herbert, Pat Johnson, Deb Sanger

The Hospitality Committee would like to offer light refreshments, i.e., beverage, fruit, cookies. Any member is invited to bring items to share. When the refreshment period begins, please put away all quilts and materials. This will prevent any damage to your valuable items. Upon completion of the refreshment period, please dispose of unfinished food and drinks before we open Show N Tell or continue a workshop.

When you bring food, please assist in the cleanup after refreshments have been served. We want to ensure that the room is back to its original order before leaving the Center. Thanks!

Sew Help Me. . .
Tips to boost your creativity

Fons & Porter book, spiral bound

Make a softcover quilting book easier to handle...

A spiral binding on a softcover book makes it easier to work with, because the book not only lies flat, but you can also fold the pages to the back without ruining them.

My Fons & Porter textbook was beginning to pop some of the pages, so I took it to my local Kinko's to have it spiral bound. She sliced off the perfect binding, punctured the pages and finished it off while I waited. The cost was just under $5.00.

Handy storage for your quilt blocks

When I was in Michaels Arts and Crafts on Rockville Pike the other day, I noticed some snaptop scrapbook cases for $7.99 each. Sized at 14 x 14 x 3, they are great for holding oversized quilt blocks because you can carry and store them without folding. If you need one a bit smaller, The Container Store has 12 x 12 cases for around $6.95.

Uhuru Challenge Project, 2007
Jennifer S Morris, Chair

Let's Get CRAZY!

This quilt challenge is an opportunity to stretch out of your comfort zone and try something different or new. A time to do some research and share your creativity with other quilters.

With today's technology, most of us have sewing machines with loads of stitch options. Altering the stitch length and width can triple the number of already programmed stitches on your machine. We also have access to machine embroidery. There are millions of free designs at our fingertips on the web.

I challenge you to let go and get Crazy Quilt-making. Remember, anything goes!

Due date - Show, tell and share your finished project(s) in December at our annual Christmas party.

2007 Block of the Month -
"Twelve Days Of Christmas"

Renea Bailey, Chair

This year’s BOM is designed around the song lyrics of “The Twelve Days of Christmas” by Keith Wonderboy Johnson. The blocks have been designed to use any method of applique, i.e. hand, machine, or fusible applique. The finished quilt will be a wall hanging that you can place in your home during the Christmas season. I hope that you enjoy this BOM; it has been quite a challenge for me to design these blocks.

Upcoming Quilt Shows, Contests, and Exhibit Opportunities

Quilters around the world are invited to enter outstanding quilts in this 15th Annual Competition coordinated by the Museum of the American Quilter’s Society. The 2008 competition is open to quilts that are innovative interpretations of the traditional Sawtooth pattern. Cash awards are given to first through fifth places in the amounts of $3,000, $1,500, $750, $500 and $300, respectively. All other finalists are awarded $100 each. This Competition gives quilters an excellent opportunity to share their work with people across the country. The quilts selected as finalists will receive awards and make up a traveling exhibition. A book about the exhibit will feature color photos of the quilts and the quiltmakers as well as the maker’s patterns and/or tips. The exhibit will open at the Museum of the American Quilter’s Society in Spring 2008 and travel to other venues http://www.quiltmuseum.org

A Tear in the Fabric: The Conceptually Driven Quilt

May 9 thru June 14, 2008

The history of quiltmaking is filled with rich and complex narratives. This show at California Polytechnic State University Art Gallery, San Luis Obispo, CA, reveals the layered nature of these narratives.

Through the display of these quilts, the exhibition hopes to inspire viewers to pause a little longer, dig a little deeper, and look for meaning that may lie beneath the surface of public discourse, first glances, and initial judgments. Quilts must be no smaller than 36 inches square and no larger than 90 inches square. Submission deadline: February 1, 2008.

Please include a brief explanation of quilt. Send your digital or slide images to:
