July 2008 |
What a wonderful show! I can’t say thank-you enough to all the members who volunteered their time, relatives, and other resources to make the show a reality! The attendees had only good things to say. Our next show: the last weekend in June 2010. THANK YOU!!!
Mark your calendars for October 2 - 4, 2008. Uhuru will be exhibiting at the Original Sewing and Quilt Expo in Chantilly, VA. In exchange for serving 24 “volunteer days” as volunteer ambassadors ( set up/take down hands, ticket takers, classroom angels, white glovers, etc.), we will be able to exhibit -- at no cost to us -- at least 25 quilts (large ones) and set up a table for selling raffle tickets and recruiting members. For more information, go to www.sewingexpo.com. If you wish to volunteer, please contact Carol Williams ASAP.
November is election month for Uhuru as well as for the nation. Whether the current officers wish to continue or not, we still need to hold election for Coordinator and Treasurer. Let’s not forget our retreat! Details to come.
Raffle ticket sales are going well. Members can pick up their tickets at the July meeting. Only 2,000 were printed and we want to sell each and every one.
Sewfully,
Carol
Quilting is an opportunity - benefit from it!
During the Workshop time 11:00 - 12:30, there will be a Sit and Sew. Bring your hand work (binding, basting, sewing on sleeves, etc.) to work on. You can also "Ask the Expert." Bring your UFO's, project problems for assistance from another quilter who has "been there, done that..."
Also during that time, we will have a "New Members' Tea": a time for you to ask questions and get answers about the history of the Guild, the privileges and responsibilities of membership, quilters' etiquette, Uhuru bees, etc. |

Jackie Tyson-Hope entered her large quilt "Mandingo Warrior" in the Annapolis Quilt Guild show (where it won second place) and also in the Sully Plantation show. Jackie says that the Sully show was a very conservative and interesting venue and a challenge to enter. She encourages other members to enter quilts in invitationals; it is a very surprising reward for your effort.

Some Pretty Clever Uses for Ugly Fabric
-
Make a quilt carrier - If necessary, wash it in hot water to get rid of any residual color that might transfer to your quilt. Sew several pieces together to get the size you want, then sew it into a carrier.
-
Make a hanging sleeve - if you're not concerned whether the sleeve is the same fabric as the backing, this is a good use!
-
Make a pin cushion -- Camilla
-
Binding for scrappy quilts - Sew several strips together - the shorter the strips, the scrappier the binding.
-
Backing for a quilt can be from different uglies. -- Margreta
- I made a blanket for my dog to sleep on -- Cynthia
You can use “uglies” to experiment with fabric paints and other embellishment techniques -- Margreta
-
Applique - cut little "nothing" shapes (including flower petals!) and applique them onto a plain or pieced border.
-
I used my ugly fabric to make a "storybook" quilt that was in the quilt show, "Little Pic-a-Ninnies" -- Brenda
-
Give it a pat, call it beautiful, and add it to your stash.
