Coordinator's
Message |
March 2009 |
Happy Birthday, Uhuru! This month Uhuru turns 15. The guild began in 1994 with eight members. Over the years, the membership has waxed and waned, but there has always been a core group that keeps the guild going and stretching its skills to serve the community and promote the art of quilting. Thanks to all, present and past members, who have undertaken this journey with us.
Our March meeting also coincides with National Quilting Day. First proposed at the National Quilting Association show in 1991, National Quilting Day gives quilters the opportunity to reflect with pride in the traditions of quiltmaking and the contributions quiltmakers have made to their families and communities for many generations. “As our country looks forward to 2009 with a new president and new hope for our country, we at The National Quilting Association thought it would be appropriate this year to devote National Quilting Day to the home.” Visit http://www.nqaquilts.org/ for more information and download a free quilt pattern.
March is also Women's History Month. The theme for 2009 is “Women Taking the Lead to Save Our Planet.” This theme is timely in a year when the world is discussing the problems and repercussions of dramatic climate changes and the recognition of diminishing natural resources. Quilters, have you tried any of the various eco or green battings made from bamboo, recycled plastics, etc.? For centuries quilters worked mostly with recycled fabrics rather than fabrics especially purchased for quiltmaking. Have you ever “repurposed” articles of clothing or other items and incorporated them into a quilt or two? Go to http://www.nwhp.org for more information.
The bus trip was great! The quilts were awesome; the shopping was wonderful. Everyone left Hampton tired and broke. Thanks, Tammie, for taking the lead on this project. Did you know that a guild donates 32 hours of white gloving in order to exhibit the opportunity or raffle quilt?
For the past two years, Uhuru has successfully exhibited at the Original Sewing and Quilting Expo at the Expo Center in Chantilly, VA, and sold raffle quilt tickets. If we want to exhibit this year, we are in need of a project manager for this exhibit. If you are interested in volunteering, please see me at the guild meeting, telephone, or email.
Sewfully,
Carol

Ugly Fabric Auction
Tammie Morrow |
This is a great opportunity to go "green"... and yellow and purple and blue and orange...
"Green" us with ugly (or not-so-ugly) fabric from your stash that can be auctioned for another kind of "green." Maybe the bidder can do their own green thing by making a quilt with it ... or maybe they can just hold onto it until it turns green?? Nah! We're not hoarders! Just bring in an armload of let-go-able fabric and share in the fun... All proceeds go to the Uhuru treasury.
Our remaining 2009 auctions will be in June, September and December; check the Uhuru calendar for updates. Address any questions to Tammietrekkie@yahoo.com.

An Inexpensive Way to Keep Track of Works in Progress
• When starting a new quilt, use a 3x5 index card to write down who the quilt is for, the occasion (if any), the completion deadline, the size it should be, and the colors and design for the top. Include information about the backing, such as color combination or fabric (such as flannel). On the back of the card write down the yardage you need to pull from your stash, or how much more you need to purchase. When the quilt is completed, take a photo and file it with the index card as a quick record of quilts you've made.
• You probably go through needles quickly; to dispose of them safely, use an old saltshaker. Just pop the old needles in, and you don't have to worry about stepping on pieces or your "little helpers" getting into the wastebasket, etc.
