The Fons and Porter Study Group will not meet in May or June. The business meeting for the Guild will begin at 10:00AM with a meeting of all quilt show committee chairs. This meeting will be followed by committee meetings and activities. The Layout, White Glove, and Program committees have already sent out emails asking for important information. Whether your answer is yea or nay, respond.
If anyone is on the Children’s Corner committee, please email Carol Williams at cwilli3833@aol.com or call ASAP.
The success of our show will require the collaboration, efforts, and goodwill of all. Make sure you are signed up for a quilt show committee and that you also let the White Glove committee whether you will be working the show on Friday (set-up) and/or Saturday. So far, Uhuru members have been outstanding in participating in guild events - some more than others. Let’s not falter now.
Sewfully,
Carol
PS: My mother is at home and recovering very well from her stroke. Thank you for all your prayers and good wishes.
Quilting is a promise - fulfill it!

Block of the Month
Cornelia Carter-Sykes, Chair |
| |
|
For May we're making the Card Basket block (http://www.quilterscache.com/C/CardBasketBlock.html) from Quilter's Cache. Remember our "each one teach one" motto, so if you find you have a suggestion or pointer for completing the block, please share it with your fellow quilters. (I did a double-take when the directions said sew the two red pieces back together after I had just cut them apart, but it's right - Linda). |

You KNOW You Have Too Much Fabric When
|
At our last guild meeting I took a poll of members to see what your first clue is when you just aren't sure whether or not you have too much fabric. The hilarious results are below:
You KNOW you have too much fabric when... |
- you can't get into your guest room and your guest has to sleep in YOUR room.
- you have to buy more storage bins to store it -- and you can't find the right storage bin when you need it.
- all you do is organize it -- fold and refold.
- JoAnn's refers customers to YOUR house.
- you have it stacked by the bed and you pray it doesn't fall over on you as you sleep.
- you have to sneak in fabric so your family won't see it.
- you realize that your fabric stash is larger than your underwear drawer.
- church folks visit on Thursday, then on Sunday the pastor praises you for running a fabric distribution center, and not seeking credit.
- you run out of places to hide it from yourself in your house.
- you like the fabric so much, you spend all your time washing and pressing it instead of sewing it.
- you start buying doubles and triples.
- you have a fabric stash in your car.
|
- you have every piece of fabric shown in "show n tell".
- you have a JoAnn's credit card that's in collection.
- you get home from shopping and have to loosen your belt and give a lady-like burp.
- you can't find it when you need it, or you've stashed it someplace and you don't find it until you decide to clean out this old box with things packed in it.
- you can't move around freely in your sewing area.
- you can't remember the project you were going to use that particular fabric for.
- your fabric area has no more room for the new fabric you just purchased.
- your shelves begin to bow in the middle.
- your dog raids your "scrap" basket and uses the fabric for rag toys.
- you build an addition onto your house for your fabric.
- you innocently proclaim - "I didn't know one can have too much fabric!"
- you buy new fabric and then find 3 yards of that same fabric.
- you can't find free space in your studio to store fabric.
- your fabric bins are beginning to push you out of your quilting space and into your bed.

Tips to boost your creativity |

Storing Quilting Rulers and Binding Strips
Ruler Storage - If you have the room, attach a piece of pegboard to the wall next to your cutting or sewing table. Slip a paper clip into the little hole at the top of the rulers and hang them from the bottom of the pegboard, which leaves room for other things such as a baggie of fused fabric pieces, scissors, tape, etc.
Binding Strips - Make assorted binding strips ahead of time so you won't have to when the quilt is finished. Take a paper towel roll with that last towel still attached, fold and press your binding and wind it around the tube. Tuck in the tail end. It sticks to the tube better with the ridges of the paper towel on it.

Stitch N Pitch
I am sure you have heard of the organization Stitch N Pitch where one can bring out their NeedleArts to a baseball game.
New this year - the Bowie Baysox Baseball Club (AA Minor League Affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles) is having s Stitch N Pitch day at the ballpark.
On May 25th at 2:05, the Baysox will be playing the Fisher Cats at Prince George’s Stadium in Bowie, Maryland. All are encouraged to bring their Needle Arts to the ballpark to sit among friends, family and colleagues and cheer on your favorite baseball team. Beginners, intermediate and experts are all welcome.
It is also Pat Zajak Day. The first 1250 fans will get a free Pat Zajak bobblehead and he will be out at the ball park signing autographs.
It should be a great day for all, so we encourage your members to bring out the whole family.
Pre order tickets for the discounted rate of $9. All seats will be behind home plate’s net, to protect all participants from foul balls.
I hope to see you and your group out at the ballpark. Feel free to contact me any time for more information.
