Coordinator's
Message

November 2008

I have been concentrating on having fun with my quilting and with quilting friends. A co-worker and I went to the Quilt Bingo event sponsored by the Southern Comforters of Bowie. She almost won a quilt! Several other Uhuru members also attended. One evening I spent with quilting friends watching a movie while we worked on various quilt projects --- a relaxing, fun way to spend time. I also enjoyed attending a meeting of the Southern Comforters at which Bonnie Rock, her daughters Alijah and Dorina, and I sold raffle tickets. Alijah is a supersaleswoman! The presentation that evening was on Baltimore Album quilts and the Baltimore Applique Society had their raffle quilt on display.

Because our retreat has been canceled, Uhuru will meet at the Cedar Heights Community Center on November 15. Officers and committee chairs (Hospitality, Membership, Door Prize, Community Service, Block of the Month, Charm Squares, Website & Newsletter, Exhibits, Challenge, Programs & Workshops, Raffle Quilt, and Library), please gather up receipts for reimbursement and draft a report of this year’s activities. I would like to provide the guild with a complete financial report this year. Before the November meeting, email me or call and let me know if you would like to continue in your present position or try another committee.

Dolores Johnson and I visited the Miller Office Building to examine the exhibit space. The Miller Building has a state of the art exhibit gallery on the second floor. Access to the floor is for state officials and their guests. There are guards and video surveillance for security. Because there is no group scheduled for January, they have asked us to hang our exhibit in time for the opening of the legislative session in January. Our exhibit will be up from the second week in January until the end of February. Quilts with a patriotic theme selected for this display will need to have

  • a 4 – 5” sleeve.
  • a dowel with two screw eyes in order to be accommodated by their hanging system.

Download from the Uhuru website and bring a completed Quilt Registration form for each quilt. Quilts for this venue will be collected at the November and December meetings. If you are not able to attend the December meeting, please call Dolores or Carol to make arrangements to drop off your quilt by January 1.

Holiday quilts for the exhibit at the Cedar Heights Community Center will be collected at the November meeting. I have not checked with the Center director yet about a day to hang the quilts, but the day after Thanksgiving has been suggested.

I want to thank again those members who have assumed leadership roles, ensuring that Uhuru remained a viable organization. I hope some of you will begin thinking about taking a more active role in Uhuru. Let Adrienne Randall, Tammie Morrow, or me know if you are interested in serving in some capacity.

Sewfully,
Carol

Quilters' Recipes

Golden Chicken Dippers

Boneless chicken breast meat; 1/2 cup fine dry breadcrumbs; 2 tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese; 1/4 tsp. basil; 1/4 tsp. oregano; 1/4 tsp. paprika; 1/4 tsp. salt; 1/8 tsp. ground pepper; 1/4 cup melted butter.

Trim chicken breasts, then cut into little triangular nuggets. Combine the breadcrumbs, cheese, basil, oregano, paprika, salt and pepper in a pie plate. Dip chicken in melted butter and roll in crumbs until well coated. Arrange on a foil-lined cookie sheet and bake in 400 F oven for 10 minutes or until no longer pink inside. Enjoy plain or with your favorite dipping sauce!

The strips for November will be "beige". The size is 5x45 inches this time. Fold the fabric in half and cut 5 inch strips lengthwise for a total of 13 strips. At some later time or at your leisure, these strips can be used as a jelly roll to make projects that require 5 inch block combinations. Pat Speth in her Nickel Quilt book gives a wonderful simple explanation for this process and some of her finished goods are shown at the right. Many of the larger blocks look as though there are triangles in them. Their basic structure is a 5 inch block. I attended her lecture at Annapolis Guild meeting 9/07 and the explanations were a piece of cake.

The following 9 members signed up for November: Jennifer Morris, Sarita Brewer, Denise Davis, Bonnie Rock, Bernerdett King, Betty Phillips, Dawn Felix, Jackie Stafford, and Felicia Few.

Block of the Month
Cornelia Carter-Sykes, Chair

November's BOM is Dorothy's Star Block from Quilter's Cache. Remember our "each one teach one" motto, so if you find you have a suggestion or pointer for completing the block, please share it with your fellow quilters.
Jennifer used her ugly fabrics!   At the left is how Jennifer promptly used two of the ugly fabrics from October's Ugly Fabric Auction. She used the green & blue as a receiving blanket and the white print as a pack-n-play mattress cover.

Product Review - SewEzi Table

I purchased the SewEzi sewing table in July and I've enjoyed using it with my Janome sewing machine. It was easy to assemble, is portable and has wheels and handles to make it easy to transport. The table comes with a clear insert that fits your particular sewing machine, as well as a soft vinyl carrying case that has a deep pocket on one side. They included some little flat spacers to adjust the height of the cut-out area, but my machine fit perfectly without them. I had a bit of a challenge getting my Janome to fit until I realized (oops!) I needed to first remove the detachable sewing platform/arm from to my machine.

You can purchase the optional wooden insert to convert your tabletop into a solid surface, or you can get the clear acrylic lightbox insert to convert your table into a lightbox - I chose the lightbox insert. You can also get the optional "Quick Change System" so you can use the table with different sewing machines without reassembling it.

The table might be considered a bit pricey, but I'm glad I got it ... when I'm sewing I have plenty of knee room and the table height is very comfortable - it's a lot more comfortable than my dining room table! Visit their site for more information - http://www.seweziusa.com/index.html

Joining Binding Ends

Tammie submitted a great tutorial on joining binding ends (my least favorite part of quiltmaking) that includes step by step photos. A picture is worth a thousand words, so I've attached it as a .pdf file so you can view the pictures along with the instructions.

Quilt Collectors' Tips

Boxes protect your quilt from ambient light and airborne contaminants like dust and heating/cooking oils. Ultraviolet rays, found in sunlight and incandescent and fluorescent lights cause fibers to deteriorate. Choose a room with a constant temperature and stable relative humidity (like a bedroom – not an attic or basement) for your storage area. Avoid placing perfume sachets, mothballs, photographs or other artifacts with your quilt.

Quilting Challenge Series from About.com
"Sew an Arizona Quilt"
Deadline - January 15, 2009

Janet Wickell introduces a new challenge series that was inspired by her trips to Arizona. She says, "I know many other states (and regions around the world) have a huge variety of topography (and climates) within their borders. It's the variety that ispired me to initiate a series of challenges to you to create site-inspired quilts - starting with Arizona." Your quilt can be applique or pieced or any technique of your choice. It can be small or large or even a single quilt block; it does not have to depict a scene. Deadline for finishing the top: January 15, 2009. For more information, visit the About.com website http://quilting.about.com/od/stepbystepquilting/ss/arizona_challen.htm?nl=1
